Building work begins on the new school for Stanley Park

Building work has now started on the new school for Stanley Park High. The first spade was put in the ground by some of the pupils who are set to benefit from the new state-of-the-art facilities.

Cllr Kirsty Jerome, Executive Member for Education and Schools, said: “This is a real landmark moment. The new building is going to make a real difference to Sutton young people for generations to come.

“The contemporary design will enable a whole new way of working to compliment the high standard of education delivered by the teaching staff at Stanley Park High.

“The current school building has reached its capacity and the extra places provided at the new site will be essential as the rising birth rate will eventually affect secondary schools as the children transfer from primary.

“This is a very exciting time and I look forward to seeing the building work progress.”

The new energy efficient building in Orchard Hill, Carshalton, will give Sutton children a world-class school with exceptional teaching facilities, increase places by 350 and provide a further 91 places for children with autistic spectrum disorders.

David Taylor, Headteacher at Stanley Park High School, said: “We are obviously delighted that work on the new school has now started. The new building will provide students with a unique opportunity to experience innovative approaches to learning in classrooms and other learning spaces that have been specifically designed for that purpose. We would like to thank all those that have worked so hard to achieve this outcome.”

The Council’s Executive agreed last week (7 June) that construction work could begin to enable the new school to open in January 2012.

The Executive has also agreed to a new Compulsory Purchase Order which would enable an access road for the school to be built on the land belonging to the Benhill Gospel Trust. This road would serve the new school and the gospel hall and care home.

Huge Step Forward For Stanley Park Building

Our new building is a huge step closer after the sale of the land at Orchard Hill was finalised by NHS Sutton and Merton and Sutton Council. A final contract between both parties was completed this week (17th March) and the sale of the land can now ahead.

Cllr Tony Brett Young, Executive Member for Young People on Sutton Council said: “I am delighted to announce that the sale of the land on the Orchard Hill site has now been completed. This is an important step for Stanley Park High and I am delighted that we are making significant progress towards building a world class school.”

We are obviously delighted. Our school community deserves the very best. It will support us in developing an outstanding experience for the increasing number of students in our local community who, as you will see from the article below, are choosing our approach to learning.

Our new state of the art school will cater for increased numbers of local children each year, with 350 places in the sixth form and 91 places for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

As well as providing ample external open spaces, a key priority for the new school is to ensure a cleaner, greener and more sustainable school environment. This school is innovative in its design by being one of the first schools in the country to be designed to both the DCSF’s Carbon Neutral Standard and to a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method sustainability standard of at least ‘Very Good’.

Applied Learning Specialism Innovation Group 2010

We have been invited to join the select Innovation Group by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust to promote and showcase best practice in applied learning. We have been nominated to join this group because of our contribution to the development of applied learning.

Membership of the Innovation Group is very prestigious and only a small number of applied learning specialist schools are invited to join each year. This invitation recognises both the central role that applied learning has in enhancing learner performance and aspiration and the leading role that our school plays in developing and sharing the many strengths of applied learning.

We Receive Top School Accolade

Following on the back of our successful Ofsted we were recently informed that we are amongst the most improved schools in the country. Letters of congratulations have flooded into the school and our success was even referred to in a House of Commons debate on 20th January. An extract from one of the letters by Vernon Coaker, Minister of State for Schools and Learners, states:

“I am delighted to congratulate your school on the excellent performance you have demonstrated at Key Stage 4 in the 2009 Achievement and Attainment Tables. The results for your school show that you are amongst the top schools this year based on sustained improvement in 5+ A*-C including English and Maths.”

Whilst attainment driven league tables are not important to us and the education of our students, we are delighted to receive praise for the progress the school has made. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their continued support in helping us achieve this recognition. It goes without saying that we will not stand still. We will continue to improve, thereby, maximizing the achievement of all our students and making our school the preferred choice of our local community.
